Last summer, I was lucky enough to be one of the 450 students to
live in San Nicolas and participate in FSSP. The Freshmen Summer Start Program was a great experience for me because I was nervous about becoming a college student and it made me fall in love with UCSB.
FSSP allowed me to live in the residence halls, eat in the dining
commons, get familiar with the campus, get familiar with the Isla Vista community, take actual UCSB classes, meet other UCSB students, and most importantly FSSP helped me transition into the UCSB life. When fall quarter arrived many FSSP students, including myself, were already familiar with the routine of classes, homework, living in the residence halls, and everything else that comes with the first quarter, which was one less thing I had to worry about during the fall.
Personally, FSSP allowed me to build a strong relationship with
people who lived in San Nicolas. During the six weeks of FSSP the only first years on campus are the FSSP students so you spend a lot of time with them. From the first week that we arrived to San Nic and came together as a floor (#WeAreONE) to battle the other seven floors (BATTLE OF THE FLOORS) , I knew that I could find a family on the first floor. San Nic quickly became our home away from home. We all shared the FSSP experience and it built a connection between us because as other students were getting to know their halls and the people in them, we already made a family in our hall. My floormates, my roommates, and my resident assistant did an amazing job creating a community with us by having movie nights, floor events, and just silly little moments in the lounge that we won’t forget. Living with my friends was so much fun, I could walk over to their room whenever. FSSP and San Nic allowed me to have unforgettable moments with my RA & hall mates who became my family.
After FSSP students get the choice of staying in San Nicolas for the remainder of the school year or moving into another hall, I loved San Nic so much I stayed for the remainder of the school year and you can still catch me
hanging around San Nic this summer!
FSSP is a great experience! You will make awesome memories and friends (I met some of my closest UCSB friends during FSSP)! If you are participating in FSSP this summer be prepared for six amazing weeks of summer fun at UCSB!
